“November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. As a healthcare provider and a diabetic, I am aware of the devastating long-term effects of poorly controlled diabetes. The first step to controlling diabetes is to realize that you have it. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), 37.3 million American adults have diabetes, but only 28.7 million have been diagnosed with it. That means that more than 8 million adults in America have diabetes and don’t even know it. This is one of the many reasons to have a primary care provider. He will order routine labs to determine if you have diabetes, and if you do, provide you tools to help control it. As with most chronic conditions, teaming up with your primary care provider increases your chances of living a long, happy, and healthy life.”
