Welcome to Week 8 of VIM Fit Fest, a virtual wellness experience celebrating Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Clinic’s 25th Anniversary. Just one more week to go in our 9 week journey. This week we visited Guy Davis Park and Sports Complex with Beth Hanna, owner and trainer with Peak Fitness. Beth will share exercises that will strengthen your core and help improve athletic performance. Guy Davis Park and Sports Complex is adjacent to the 10th Street Community Center and features multiple ball fields, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, running track, covered playground, and even an outdoor stage. Hundreds of children and their families enjoy team sports each year. The 10th Street Community Center is also home to the East Stuart Youth Initiative Program. This program is a collaboration between the City of Stuart Community Services Division, the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County, Tyke & Teens, and the Stuart Police Department. Children participate in a variety of innovative recreational, educational, music, and counseling programs. Our challenge this week includes a lateral lunge, plank with a shoulder tap, and a side plank. Beth shares that to get the most out of these exercises, engage your abdominal muscles while performing all the moves. Your abdominal muscles naturally tense when coughing or laughing to give you an idea of how it feels when those muscles are activated. You can also imagine pulling your belly button back towards your spine, being sure to remember to breathe while the abs are engaged.
