The may 16-17 Robert F. Novins Memorial Golf Tournament was a smashing success, raising nearly $90,000 for the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic!
“The support this year has really been great,” said Carson Novins, owner of Carson’s Tavern and organizer of the tournament along with his sister Beth Novins, who co-owns the Osceola Cafe.
“I’m very grateful to all the sponsors, players and donors who’ve contributed to the success of this tournament,” Novins said. “The golf is important of course, but the goal, really, is to have a lot of fun while supporting a great cause.”
They started the Novins Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of their father, a prominent attorney and public figure who died of cancer at Martin Memorial Hospital in 2002. The golf tournament raised funds for the hospital until 2012, when the Novins decided to support VIM Clinic.
“My father believed in philanthropy and VIM Clinic is a great fit for our philanthropic goals,” Novins said. “It’s clearly an organization our supporters can get behind in honoring the memory of my father,” he added.
Once again, the amazing Reed Hartman worked his magic at the pre-tournament reception
to bring in nearly $13,000 for the live auction while the silent auction raised almost $10,000 more. Golfers and guests were treated to a
buffet dinner, live music and a 50/50 drawing, among other events.
This years’ tournament took place at Willoughby Golf Club, which golfers all agreed was a fabulous venue. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The day started off with the $1,000 putting contest that saw many of the favorites fall away until Rich Hyland faced Chris Dalfo. Hyland took the grand prize – then donated half of it back to VIM.
Prizes were given to the top team, net score in each division with one overall team award for low gross. With 31 foursomes in play, the day was won by the home team of Gerry Knebels, Chad Gates, Bob Watson and Stu Lamb. Knebels was named the MVP.
The other tournament winners were the Sailfish Point team of Bob Petrizzo, Tony Angelino, Mike Kneip and Scott Brynski; the Milesi team of Mitch Milesi, Tim Griffin, Dave Eddy and Brady Cobb; and the Rice team of Rob Rice, Brian Goumas, Danny Moxley and Andre Mantabalo.
Wayne Klick won the closest to the pin on the 16th hole and Theresa Beditz won closest to the pin on the 6th hole. Other winners were Chad Gates for the longest drive on the 5th hold and Eva DeLattre for the longest drive on the 13th hole.
