In Memoriam: Howard E. Voss MD

Howard E. Voss, MD  (July 23, 1935 – July 26, 2020)

Dr. Voss was the heart of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic. For twenty years he led the Clinic with passion and professionalism. His accomplishments as a medical doctor could fill volumes but Dr. Voss always said that “his entire career was a prologue to leading VIM Clinic.” He felt it was his true calling.

Dr. Voss was an entertaining speaker who never missed a party or an opportunity to promote the Clinic and advocate for our patients. His speaking engagements over the years netted many donors and volunteers and resulted in millions of dollars in contributions. He wanted the best for the patients and was proud to say “VIM Clinic stands among the finest clinics in the country.”

Building on the fine reputation of the Clinic, he also wanted to share his knowledge and approach to health care with a younger generation. He created a relationship with Florida State University’s College of Medicine to mentor and teach students. As a professor, he was warm and encouraging and impressed upon his students to care for patients as if they are neighbors. He felt medicine was a noble profession and should be practiced with reverence.

VIM Clinic is forever grateful for Dr. Voss’s leadership and commitment to exceptional care. In his honor the Clinic has created the “Voss Center for Excellence” to carry on his legacy.
