In addition to primary care, the VIM Clinic offers specialty services as available from the practitioner community. Because we are a free clinic, the demand for services is high and growing — even with our strict eligibility requirements.
If you’re a physician, specialist, nurse, nurse practitioner, medical assistant or a student in the medical field who’s interested in joining our family of volunteers, here is what you can expect:
You will be rewarded
The VIM Clinic is a very special place. We provide a warm and friendly atmosphere where you can practice your skills and receive a great deal of satisfaction. You’ll get the time you need for each appointment. We don’t keep patients waiting for hours in the reception room so they won’t be angry or frustrated by the time they see you.
These are patients who know the value of your services, are immensely grateful for your time and truly appreciate being treated like they matter. Some of our patients have gone untreated for years. You’ll track their progress and get to know them. They’ll be among the most rewarding patients you’ll ever treat.
You will be educated
You’ll get five continuing medical education credits by volunteering with the Clinic. These will count toward the 40 you need to obtain every two years to keep your license active. You can give as little 2 ½ days a month for primary care, or once a month for specialty care.
Also, we are a teaching facility for many medical degrees and certifications that include: AR
NP, PA, RN, MA, CMA, and PharmD. Our students come from Florida State University College of Medicine, the University of Florida College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University, Indian River State College and Keiser University.
Third-year medical students can do a longitudinal rotation with us. They’ll benefit from working with our volunteer physicians, many of whom have retired and contribute a vast wealth of valuable experience.
You will be challenged
Seeing patients who have not been treated in years often means multiple issues are involved. Your work will be invigorating. You’ll be challenged and your skills will be stretched. Your work will really matter to these patients and you’ll have a big impact on their lives. We guarantee it.
You will be protected
The VIM Clinic is a free-standing, not-for-profit organization that provides care to the indigent and working poor. As such, our volunteer practitioners and service providers are protected by Sovereign Immunity through the Florida Department of Health and the Martin County Health Department.
Under the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program, the State of Florida must be named in any lawsuit, not the practitioners. Signing the form does not mean that you must see VIM patients. Even if you do not work with us directly, you may get one of our patients in the ER or elsewhere in the system.
You will part of a team
You will work with people who are here because they want to be here. We have a very small paid staff and everyone else is a volunteer. They’re all here for the same reasons: to give back to the community, make a difference in people’s lives, have some fun, enjoy some camaraderie — and to be part of something very special.
Take the next step
If any of this appeals to you, contact us or fill out a volunteer application form. You’re more than welcome to arrange for a tour and meet with out staff. If the VIM Clinic seems like a good fit for you, and you seem like a good fit for us, you’ll become part of the VIM Clinic team.
You owe it to yourself to explore the possibilities!
