STUART-Happiness brings gratitude and great feelings within. It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are, whether it’s health or finances; finding a way to stay happy is important. This is how Janie Wesselman lives her life and it’s helped her get through a few battles in the past. Wesselman was referred to Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Stuart by someone who is a patient. She didn’t have much money, but was happy she found an organization that could support her medical needs.

Wesselman has been uninsured for 20 years, but she felt safe because she’s a patient at VIM. She’s dealt with blood pressure problems that’s now under control and Wesselman needed cataract surgery.

“Having blood pressure issues, they helped stabilize it with blood pressure medication. They pretty much took care of me all around as far as blood test, various things that I suggest they needed and they took care of it and I’m great,” said Wesselman.

Wesselman noticed her eye sight was weakening and she had to strain whenever she was reading.  She feared that she would eventually go blind. VIM referred her to Stuart Eye Institute where they performed the cataract surgery. Wesselman was able to see her grandchildren open their presents for Christmas.

“When I saw them opening their presents and I can see crystal clear. I can understand what a great gift that was given to me,” said Wesselman.

She wasn’t surprised with her experience here because she’s always heard great things about VIM. Wesselman is excited because she’s getting great care. In addition to her regular checkups at VIM, she is benefiting by keeping a healthy diet.

“I eat low carbs and actually I don’t smoke or drink. Years ago I made that decision because I knew once I turned 50 I definitely wanted to change my life. If I want to live the next 50 years I don’t want any challenges that would be a high cost factor to my family or myself,” said Wesselman.

This organization has changed her life and she spreads the word to others. She believes people who aren’t insured and make little money should give VIM a chance.
