Dr. Bill Tozzo enjoys his birthday with volunteers and staff

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Bill Tozzo, one of our devoted supporters and volunteer physicians, VIM Clinic will be mortgage free this summer!

In 2004, Dr. Tozzo and his wife June of Palm City, pledged $500,000, to be paid over 10 years. As a result, the $500,000 mortgage on the 4,800 square Clinic will be paid off this year. To celebrate the milestone, a mortgage-burning ceremony is planned for April 15, with the Tozzos as guests of honor.

Dr. Tozzo (at the center of the photo) has been a member of our volunteer staff since 2000. He graduated from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland in 1960 and did his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital Center in New York, specializing in urology. The Tozzos had been regular visitors to Martin County for 28 years before moving here in 1996.

They saw the need for VIM Clinic to focus solely on patient care without having the additional worry of fund raising to pay the mortgage. Accordingly, Dr. Tozzo became a founding board member of The Friends of Volunteers in Medicine, with the mission of raising funds and awareness for the clinic.

In 2006, the building was renamed the Tozzo Medical Building in his honor and a bronze plaque was placed on the building by the front door.

The Tozzos have led by example in supporting the Clinic financially, through the annual Gala balls and by their bequest. Although Dr. Tozzo recently retired from VIM Clinic, he continues to serve as an FVIM board member.

During his years at the Clinic, Dr. Tozzo’s easygoing, jocular manner made him a favorite among staff, fellow volunteers and patients. Thank you Dr. Tozzo for being one of the pillars of VIM Clinic’s success!
